onikakushi bad ending, meant to be read after tatarigoroshi
reading time: 09/02/26 1 session
ch1
- keiichi pov: during watanagashi festival, keiichi separates from club and winds up hanging out with shion, who is alone. she's uncharacteristically pensive: she explains the curse superstition to him. he is unnerved
- seems to operate as an alternative to how in onikakushi, keiichi learns about the curse through ooishi
- mion interrupts; her eyes are glazed over. he's misperceiving mion freaking out over shion interfering with her crush on keiichi as mion stepping in to enforce curse secrecy
- mion tells shion that she's about to be late for work. alone, keiichi is very freaked out by mion; he nearly vomits in the river
- the rest of the club joins them, then jirou as well. they decide on jirou's punishment game: with his hands behind his back, they write farewell messages on his shirt in marker
- jirou leaves with miyo (who's not really shown). keiichi goes to ask mion if what shion said is true, but hesitates too much
- tips:
- Dam Supporter Couple's Falling Accident
- not the same as the onikakushi tip as it doesn't name the houjous
- newspaper clip detailing that the falling incident investigation is ongoing and difficult due to weather conditions
- Housewife Murder Incident
- not the same as onikakushi tip
- blank, as the news went unreported
- plays out like onikakushi's ch7; the murder card combinations are different
- instead of keiichi being called out, mion is. the game goes on as keiichi+rena vs satoko+rika
- a whole hour later, mion returns exhausted. as the game went on without her, she's playing the punishment game: doing everyone's grocery runs
- home alone, keiichi is waiting on mion's grocery delivery: cup noodles. feeling bad for her, he tags along to help her carry the bags
- midway, keiichi asks if what mion was called out of the game over had to do with watanagashi's curse. mion suddenly acts cold with eyes glazed over, angrily probing about who taught him the curse. she drops her groceries then snaps out of it, realizing it was shion
- she sharply warns him to stay away from shion, saying she'll explain everything once it's sorted out
- keiichi is unnerved even after things go back to normal; it sounds to him like mion is about to kill shion
- back home that night, keiichi receives a phone call: it's mion
- asking to meet up at the library, she seems to not recall that she just handled groceries with keiichi (it's shion as mion)
- they meet up; something is off. mion says she'll explain the curse to him so long as the information remains between them.
- she explains jirou is dead (typical scenario) and the club are currently suspects. she explains previous victims' circumstances, including satoshi
- as the library announces it's closing, mion leaves to meet up with family members. rena suddenly appears: she was doing shopping downtown
- she wants to go home with keiichi, who is unnerved; she probes, asking why he was at the library with a girl (eyes glaze over). plays out like an alternate to her onikakushi "that's a lie!" scene with fakeouts
- the next few days, mion is absent from school. keiichi is very spacey and unnerved without her. on the way home, rena explains a cop visited her to ask about jirou
- suddenly, ooishi interrupts them: rena tries to steal keiichi away, but he ultiately agrees to talk with ooishi
- keiichi gives away that he knows jirou was killed. ooishi then explains mion's history of arrests related to the dam protests. keiichi is shocked to learn that mion is the head of the criminal sonozaki family. he's conflicted over the fact that she had warned him to be careful with the family at the library (because that was shion)
- arriving home (hours later?), rena awaits him at his doorstep and interrogates him. keiichi concludes that rena is working with mion, who must be guilty on some level. her eyes eventually glaze over as keiichi gets more and more unnerved; he lies and says ooishi did not discuss mion with him
- eventually, rena leaves. right before turning out of sight, she asks if keiichi is feeling alright in a very cold tone
- the next day at school is gloomy until mion suddenly arrives. keiichi wants to hang out with her, but is overwhelmed with the unnerving feeling. he feels as though rika is giving him scary looks, so he asks her behind the storage shed area (like arc2) if there's a target on his back
- she affirms his name has never come up in village head meetings so he has nothing to worry about. still, keiichi perceives her as unusually cold and is worried
- after school, keiichi catches mion and asks to walk home together: he asks her why she waited until now to explain the village's curse, to which she says she simply didn't want to unnerve him
- suddenly, her eyes glaze over: keiichi asks if they're friends, which makes her laugh dryly. she walks off and keiichi is left incredibly anxious, afraid that if he speaks to the cops about anything she will target him
- that night, a storm breaks out
- in bed, as he's anxious, he starts to see shion's jumpscare eyes from arc2 staring him down. his mom tells him he has a call: its ooishi
- keiichi takes the receiver to his room. ooishi explains that shion has gone missing and mion's location is suddenly unconfirmed. he explains that for last year's incident the two of them briefly went missing
- keiichi is terrified; he feels as if if he were to divulge any of the suspicious things mion has told him, he'd be the next victim
- he struggles to sleep, fighting hallucinations of mion
- the next morning plays out lighthearted. keiichi is relieved things are back to normal. mion is absent
- while spaced out, keiichi falls for a trap satoko laid: spoiled milk is spilled on him. in trying to clean it up, scare chords play...?
- at club, keiichi wins as he was aiming to get back at satoko. the scene cuts out ominously
- timeskip: 10 years later, a now retired ooishi meets with mamoru at a station. they drive to a hospital: there they meet mion, the sole survivor of the great hinamizawa disaster
- she was found locked in the cell of the main house's torture bunker. she suffered head trauma during confinement that has heavily affected her memory
- the disaster was volcanic gas eruption from the swamp
- even though the case is considered closed, the cops regularly visit mion to ask her questions (more sympathetic than an interrogation but still...). she is unresponsive
- in response to the word "hinamizawa", she begins playing cards with nobody, weakly speaking as if to her club
- frustrated, ooishi shouts at her (cmon man). her only reply is to weakly ask keiichi what today's punishment game should be
- tips:
- Great Disaster
- discusses the local aftermath: belief in oyashirosama's curse was bolstered outside the village, but related traditions were not carried out
- hinamizawa syndrome is eventually coined across the country as a mental illness caused *by* the disaster
- the village was quarantined; the blockade was almost lifted, then a new surge of gas was detected
- most survivors eventually succumbed to hinamizawa syndrome. mion is the current sole survivor; the shock of unknown proceeding events combined with the village massacre have left her in a traumatized, regressed state. she's staying at a hospital in okinomiya
- meant to be read after tsukiotoshi
- picks up where the hospital scene ended. ooishi apologizes for his gruffness, then hands the dazed mion rena's white hat
- he explains this hat was found in a box tossed into the river alongside the remains of a hamster
- ooishi shakes mion's shoulders and is told off by mamoru and the nurse. as the cops leave, mion suddenly regains her senses and calls them back in
-
mion tearfully exclaims she's received rena's message that the disaster was not a natural occurrance, gripping rena's bloodstained hat. the scene cuts out: mion was pronounced dead at 5 am the next morning due to acute heart failure
- the girls complain that this arc is nonsense (right). mion in particular comments there aren't enough hints towards what the ending is about, and its as if its a worse case scenario served in response to in-story mion's shutting down keiichi from investigating the curse mystery
- rena explains this is onikakushi's alternate route: this happens if keiichi doesn't go to the dam dump with rena and neglects satoko
- ooishi and mamoru appear, explaining it's also the pre-matsuribayashi introduction to mamoru
- keiichi and shion are absent as they're rehearsing their lines
- rika says she promises to never drink while underage
