ch1
-
pov: tomoe minai, a head detective from the kakiuchi prefecture. she arrives on a mountainous crime scene alongside her subordinate fujita. tomoe is hardened, sharp and alert while fujita is a slacker
-
they're investigating a large fire that was just put out. the local lead detective is named hayami. they investigate miyo's supposed corpse, which is burnt beyond any recognition
-
tomoe is unaffected by the corpse, as she apparently deals with charred bodies frequently. hayami reports the firefighters arrived and dealt with the fire around 11.00 pm until 11.30 pm
-
they quickly rule out suicide: it's clear this body was dumped here then lit
-
tomoe realizes something is off: the forensic team is absent. hayami suspiciously explains they were sent off as this actually under the sawaguchi prefecture's jurisdiction, not kakiuchi prefecture's
-
fujita is incredulous as a similar incident last month resulted in tomoe getting pay docked; she's framed this as covering for her subordinate but really did so to self-discipline
-
hayami calls tomoe a "princess" as she's practically a celebrity with surrounding cops. he basically ensured both the kakiuchi team and the sawaguchi team will get access to evidence, as *technically* a bit of the forest is under kakiuchi's jurisdiction, but what tomoe will have access to is a bit rushed
-
tomoe's father was a cop at a high position that she's trying to emulate, but being a younger woman manager has caused her peers to mistreat her
-
she drinks and binge eats in response to such stress
-
natsumi pov: she is awoken for school. she seems depressed and narrates that going to her new school is very difficult
-
she recounts her first day at school after transferring from okinomiya. she was overwhelmed until her classmates chisato saeki and tamako makimura befriended her. chisato is a medicine-obsessed heiress to a large local hospital; the class president tamako is her straightman
-
she's lived in the city for a year now. she lives with her quick-tempered mom + gentle dad and grandma
-
a conflict is presented between following fast-paced city life trends and retaining hinamizawa/okinomiya traditions. natsumi is to pray at a little shrine for oyashirosama before leaving the house, which she wishes she could avoid
-
grandma is very devoted to oyashirosama, whereas her daughter natsumi's mother has been trying to do away with the traditions since before they moved from okinomiya
-
at school, natsumi has a pe lesson. chisato is a lesbian pervert? she's worse than rena and mion
-
her friends tease her that she could have an intense disease (going for the tragic irony factor)
-
introduction to akira toudou, a childhood friend of chisato and tamako's. he's an art student who attends via scholarship so has more work than others
-
on the way to natsumi's part time job at a care facility for the elderly, chisato tells her to meet up at the library tomorrow to help prep for career meetings coming up at school
-
her boss yamase is very gentle with her. the patients all jokingly offer their kids as potential husbands for natsumi, but she has a crush on akira
-
a newly transferred patient named hatakeyama is barely responsive, instead calling to oyashirosama. he lights up and for the first time interacts with other residents after natsumi connects with him, explaining she's a kimiyoshi
-
overall, natsumi is ashamed of her heritage and wants to keep her image of city girl. her part time job is against school regulations and kept secret from her parents: she's working to get them a nice gift for their 20th anniversary and to step closer towards adulthood
-
she looked up to mion, who she saw as very independant
-
just as she's leaving work, she bumps into akira: he immediately finds out she has a job against school regulations
-

Really, She's a Good Girl
-
chisato pov; conversing with her dad. she's skipping out on a concert she waiting for for months to help natsumi, going over all the ways natsumi is at a disavantage at an advanced school that already fails its students
-
it sounds like chisato lost someone and is thinking of natsumi as their replacement
ch2
-
two days later, natsumi is preparing for her career meeting. tamako jokes about chisato being able to survive a disaster that wipes out all life, which makes natsumi tense up... tamako then gifts her a manicure set
-
natsumi hides her "city girl" stuff from her mom and grandma
-
natsumi is very anxious about her future as she hasn't decided on anything at all. in her interview, the teacher explains her current university choices would not work out, but her alternative options are too expensive
-
natsumi grows unnerved; the sound of papers flipping suddenly is compared to rena hearing the evacuation flyers in tsukiotsushi
-
the teacher mentions the school akira is backed by; she gets even more upset as she has no chance at all to get into that school. she gets further unnerved, feeling as if having been born in hinamizawa is a curse that's preventing her growth
-
(all things considered the teacher is not being harsh? she's giving natsumi some reasonable alternative options, but she's just spiralling)
-
natsumi returns to her friends crying. they decide to go out in the city to cheer up. natsumi stays back in the classroom a bit as they run errands
-
akira enters the classroom; natsumi clumsily panics then he asks her out. as she fails to reply, he leaves her to respond whenever she feels like it
-
chisato enters; sudden tension as she asks about natsumi and akira (natsumi thinks she might be jealous, chisato knew akira first) that then dissolves, as its about a bet between her and tamako. the sound of paper rustling freaking natsumi out is re-emphasized (chisato got a stationary set)
- (at this point i took a big pause to instead read umineko)
